Kinsol Trestle

A magnificent work of art that successfully blends in with its natural surroundings – that’s the Kinsol Trestle. Built in 1920 from sturdy Douglas fir, the wooden framed bridge was part of the Canadian Northern Pacific Railway route on Vancouver Island.

A breath of fresh air on the Pacific Coast

Immigrating to Vancouver was a near and dear project to me. It meant a well needed escape from a Parisian life that isn’t as glamorous as you might think. It only took me a few days to get a first feel of Vancouver and its inhabitants. I was pleasantly surprised to see how easy it is for Vancouverites to converse, joke and share personal stories with perfect strangers.

The Wilderness

The library in Pemberton, B.C. looks small where it sits, in the middle of a nearly empty road across from a makeshift park and a dirt pond. It consists of two sections that were haphazardly stitched together.

I spent much of the summer of 2006 reading all the books on its shelves that had previously drawn my curiosity, but that I had never bothered to pick up. I had heard of Generation X before, but it wasn’t until I borrowed Polaroids of the Dead that Douglas Coupland resonated with me.

Vancouver, Bolivia, and the search for ‘mining justice’

Last Wednesday, August 1, I attended a vigil outside of the downtown Vancouver headquarters of Goldcorp, at 666 Burrard Street. The event, organized by the Mining Justice Alliance, was held to draw attention to the injustices committed by Canadian mining companies in Latin America and to remember those who had been killed for their opposition to mega mining projects.

Heritage Afloat

For me, a heritage house has character, history, craftsmanship. It is built from excellent materials with attention to detail and style, and most importantly, it has a sense of mystery. When you walk in, you know the place has a story to tell; you’re intrigued with the built-in cabinetry, the original woodwork and the sense of warmth and home they evoke. The house presented here has all these attributes and more. Its excellent condition bears witness to a well-constructed, well-loved house.
