Where Mountain Cats Live

Now until Jan. 17, 2026

www.grunt.ca/exhibitions/where-mountain-cats-live

Where Mountain Cats Live is a lush invitation for strengthening community bonds, while acknowledging the precarity that we often build our roots upon. Via table-based installation, prints and accompanying artist’s books, artist Jenie Gao collapses layers of global and local colonization, childhood memories and familial narratives of home, displacement and perseverance, embedded in individual objects. The centrepiece of this exhibition is the iconic ‘lazy Susan’ table, a post-colonial innovation emblematic of Chinese American and Canadian restaurants. The exhibit is an investigation of material culture, an homage to the ‘imagination of the oppressed’ and a love letter to Jenie Gao’s mother and extended communities who, in the face of many uncertainties, maintain a sense of home.

Sharni Pootoogook: Creatures, Shadows and Dreams

Now until Feb. 22, 2026

www.evergreenculturalcentre.ca/exhibit

The life and work of Sharni Pootoogook (1922–2003), though still largely underexplored, draws clear and fundamental connections between first-generation artists in Kinngait, Nunavut, and the current trends in Inuit graphic art. Her bold designs helped to shape and inform the course of Inuit printmaking during a period of great turmoil that threatened Inuit land, culture and traditional languages. Drawn from the Kelowna Art Gallery’s permanent collection and supplemented by works on loan from Simon Fraser University, this exhibition features works on paper that demonstrate Pootoogook’s trademark style of heavy linework and well-balanced design. Blurring the boundaries between human and animal, the spiritual and the physical, Pootoogook’s work creates space for wonder and uncertainty.

The Renaissance of Roman Ruins and Their Lessons for Today

Dec. 11, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

www.dantesocietybc.ca/event-details/the-renaissance-of-roman-ruins-and-their-lessons-for-today

In the 15th and 16th centuries, Rome’s ancient ruins were excavated, examined and elevated as symbols of a past to be both honoured and understood. Yet while some Roman ruins were protected and preserved, others were torn down, stripped of their marble and reduced to rubble. The Renaissance fascination with antiquity was fraught with tensions, which surfaced most sharply when respect for the past collided with contemporary needs. From President Trump’s demolition of the White House’s East Wing to the rise of Vancouver’s new towers, the same question persists: how can we reconcile respect for history with the demands of the modern world? Check out the website to learn more about this talk by SFU History associate professor Emily O’Brien.
